The concept development of the Rekord C began as early as 1963, based on specifications from Hans Mersheimer, Chief Engineer and Technical Director of Adam Opel AG. The new model was intended to replace the Rekord B, an interim model that had only been produced for one year. On September 10, 1966, the new Rekord C was finally unveiled in Opel dealerships. A large-scale advertising campaign was launched to draw public attention to the new flagship of the Opel lineup. After its predecessor, the Rekord B, which was only a year old, had not been perceived as truly new, a genuinely new Rekord was now available.
