The VW Beetle with its oval window is a cult classic that has been on the road for over 60 years. Its development began in 1931 in Ferdinand Porsche’s design office, inspired by earlier prototypes such as those by Béla Barényi and Hans Ledwinka. Production started after World War II under British supervision in Wolfsburg, where Heinz Nordhoff managed the plant.
In 1953, the oval window replaced the split rear window, and in 1955, the one-millionth Beetle rolled off the assembly line. With over 15 million vehicles produced, the Beetle became the world’s most produced car in 1972. German production ended in 1978, followed by imports from Mexico until 1985.
